Book Title: The Five People You Meet In Heaven
Author: Mitch Albom
Background: I got this book as a surprise from my husband. I looked it up on Amazon and it has 24K+ reviews. I decided to read it. It was a quick read. After a long time, I picked up a book and finished it in a stretch in a couple of hours.
Book Summary: This is a story about Eddie, who dies in an accident trying to save a little girl, how he meets five people who he knew in the heaven and the lessons he learned through these interactions.
Lessons Eddie learned:
- No life is a waste. The only time we waste is the time we spend thinking we are alone. Everything happens for a reason. There are no random acts. All lives are interconnected.
- We all make sacrifices. But we don’t be angry over them. We don’t keep thinking about what we lost. Sacrifice is a part of life. It is supposed to be. It is not something to regret. It is something to aspire to.
- Holding anger is a poison. It eats you from inside. We think hating is a weapon that attacks the person who harmed us. But hatred is a curved blade. And the harm we do, we do to ourselves.
- Lost love is still love. It takes a different form, that’s all. Memory becomes your partner. You nurture it. You hold it. You dance with it. Life has to end. Love doesn’t.
- Life has a purpose. No matter what you do in life, you are here for a reason.
Review: May be because I had high expectations to begin with given the reviews in Amazon, I was slightly disappointed after reading it. Yes, the lessons are good. The way the story is framed is good. But I am not sure if it was worth the hype. However, I am so glad my husband bought it and I read it because this resumed my book reading habit this year and have read a few books since then.
